Arno Rafael Minkkinen was born in Helsinki, Finland, in June 1945. Minkkinen has received numerous awards, including two Polaroid Studio Grants in 1984 and 1987, and a New England Foundation for the Arts Fellowship/National Endowment for the Arts Regional Grant in 1991. Minkkinen has been making nude self-portrait photographs since 1971, usually without using assistants and only making single negatives. “What you see happening in the frame of my image happened inside the viewfinder of my camera,” he says
In this collection of self-portraits Arno Rafael Minkkinen incorporates his own nude body into a range of isolated settings, emphasizing its bond to the natural world. Whether rooted to the ground like an aspen or emerging from a smooth bank of snow, he contorts himself to merge with the contours of the landscape.
