In Animalia, Horenstein does not simply document the animals; instead, he chose not to shoot in color and not to show their environment. Horenstein examines the animals closely and abstractly, caputring their inherent beauty, oddness and mistery. Many of Horenstein's creatures remind of the lost magical connection between the "animal world" and our own. They are unsettling and they mesmerize. They transcend familiar boundaries between subject and object.
