The proliferation of books, articles, and exhibitions of W. Eugene Smith's photographs since his death in 1978 has made the "master of the photographic essay” instantly recognizable. This catalog illustrates 63 of Smith's photographs, some of which have rarely been seen. The power of Smith's vision extends far beyond his legendary icons such as Walk to Paradise Garden, Smoky City, and Welch Miners, with which he has been chiefly identified. This catalog endeavors to illustrate the depth of Smith's prodigious talent. The photographs have been selected from a larger group on the basis of each image's visual impact combined with the quality and condition of the print.
