Press release

Robert Klein Gallery (RKG) and SEA-DAR are pleased to announce URBAN LEGENDS: A Global Perspective, a major four-month exhibition exploring the architecture, density, history, and transformation of the modern city through the aerial photography of Jeffrey Milstein and a selection of renowned photographers, including Tom Baril, Peter Bialobrzeski, Jeff Brouws, Edward Burtynsky, Laura McPhee, Thomas Ruff, Arne Svenson, Michael Wolf, and Yang Yongliang.

Opening October 22, 2026, at the RKG x SEA-DAR The Project Space in Boston's SoWa Arts District, the exhibition will feature a substantial presentation of Milstein's photographs of cities including New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Rome, and other major urban centers. His distinctive aerial perspective forms the foundation of the exhibition, transforming familiar cities into intricate compositions of architecture, infrastructure, movement, geometry, and human activity.

The title URBAN LEGENDS deliberately plays on two meanings of the word legend. A legend can be a story or narrative associated with a place, while in cartography, a legend is the key to a map-the guide that allows us to understand its symbols, lines, colors, and patterns. In this exhibition, photography becomes a similar kind of visual key: a way of decoding and understanding the cities around us.

Milstein's photographs reveal a shared visual vocabulary across seemingly different urban environments. Streets become lines and networks, buildings become patterns, and parks, waterways, bridges, and transportation systems reveal relationships that are difficult to perceive from the ground. The character of each city remains distinct, while unexpected relationships and patterns emerge.

The exhibition expands this perspective through a carefully selected group of works by photographers whose approaches to the city differ from Milstein's. From Michael Wolf's densely layered Hong Kong architecture and Peter Bialobrzeski's observations of rapidly changing urban environments, to Laura McPhee's layered views of Kolkata, Tom Baril's atmospheric studies of New York architecture, Edward Burtynsky's aerial view of urban renewal in Shanghai, and Yang Yongliang's imagined futuristic landscapes, these works offer complementary ways of seeing and understanding the city.

These works are not intended as a survey of urban photography, but rather as points of connection and contrast with Milstein's aerial perspective. Each offers a different way of looking at the city-through density, architecture, history, scale, transformation, lived experience, or imagination. Together, the photographs provide different "legends" for reading the urban landscape.

A city can be understood as a map, a pattern, an architectural structure, a neighborhood, a historical record, a constantly changing system, or an imagined world. The perspective from which it is photographed fundamentally changes what we see.

At the heart of Urban Legends is a simple proposition: the way we see our global cities depends on where we stand.

From above, the city becomes a map.
From the street, it becomes a lived environment.
Through photography, it becomes something else entirely.
