"I just keep looking. Eventually I see something and my camera is always in my car. So, if I’m driving somewhere and I see something I’ll stop — unless it’s going to make me outrageously late — and I’ll make a picture." - Chip Hooper
Hooper settled in Carmel Valley, California, in 1988 and became a regular visitor to the coast, lured by the majesty and tranquility of the Pacific Ocean – and by the unique quality of light found there. Through his work with a large-format 8 x 10 inch view camera, he has embraced the patient and meticulous approach that it demands and has achieved a high degree of technical mastery that is exhibited in his highly detailed prints. His subject matter connects him to a line of artists who have been profoundly inspired by the Pacific Ocean, including Ansel Adams and Minor White. Nonetheless, Chip Hooper has developed a unique contemporary vision of his own, refining the expressive power of landscape photography through his meditative studies of sea, sky and light.
