Edouard-Denis Baldus

Beginning in 1850, when French interest in the vanishing past was heightened by the revolution and the introduction of modernism, Baldus’ photographs helped to confirm national historical identity by marrying the past and future, showing a reverence for history and an enthusiasm for modernity. Recognized in history as a visionary pioneer, Baldus defined landscape and architectural photography shortly after the medium was introduced.
