Brassai was born in 1899 in Brasso, Transylvania. Settling in Paris in 1921, he became fascinated with the city’s nightlife. Brassai received numerous awards during his life. He was named in 1974 Chevalier des Arts et les Lettres, and in 1976 Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Legion d’Honneur. In 1979 he was awarded the French National Grand Prize for Photography.
